Let me tell you something, family—self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Too many of us, especially as women, especially as Black women, have been conditioned to believe that taking time for ourselves is selfish. That if we rest, if we say no, if we prioritize our own well-being, we’re somehow letting others down. But let me ask you this: How can you pour into others when your own cup is bone dry?
The Power of the Pause
Life will keep moving whether you stop to catch your breath or not. But here’s the thing—if you don’t take a pause on your terms, life will force one upon you. Maybe in the form of burnout, exhaustion, or even illness. Self-care is about choosing to pause before life makes that choice for you.
What Does Self-Care Look Like?
Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and spa days (though those are lovely too!). It’s deeper than that. It’s:
Setting boundaries – Saying no without guilt and protecting your peace.
Listening to your body – Resting when you need to, moving when it feels good.
Feeding your spirit – Whether that’s through prayer, meditation, journaling, or dancing in your living room.
Surrounding yourself with love – Cutting out toxic relationships and leaning into the ones that nourish your soul.
Investing in your growth – Reading, learning, seeking therapy, or counseling when needed.
You Deserve to Be Whole
Self-care is not a reward; it’s the foundation of your well-being. It’s not selfish, it’s sacred. When you take care of yourself, you show up stronger, more present, and more loving in every area of your life. Your family, your friends, your purpose, they all benefit when you are at your best.
So today, I challenge you to do something just for you. Take that nap, read that book, turn off your phone for an hour, say no without an explanation. Whatever it is, remind yourself that YOU MATTER. And that taking care of yourself is the first step in showing up fully for the life you deserve.
What’s one way you’ll commit to recharging your soul this week?
